Best time to visit Split

June, September and October give the best mix of warm days, sea you can swim in and room on the Riva. July and August bring the heat and the crowds, and November is the wettest.

Best month for your kind of trip

Walking the old town
April, May and October. Highs of 19 to 24 °C in spring and 21 °C in October keep the stone lanes pleasant, and the terraces are open.
Swimming and island days
June to September. Highs are 26 to 31 °C and rain is rare, with just 2 days in both July and August.
Museums and quiet
December to February. Highs of 10 to 13 °C and plenty of showers, but the palace is nearly empty.
Busiest weeks
July and August. The airport handled most of its passengers in these two months in 2025, so expect full terraces and tight ferry timetables.

Mean daily maximum and minimum temperatures and rain days from the ERA5 reanalysis, 2016 to 2020, a short period and not a long-term normal. Daylight is the day length in the middle of each month. Crowd levels follow the monthly passenger counts of Split Airport in 2025 and are not a count of visitors in town. The long-term station records of Split Marjan, 1948 to 2024, also show November as the month with the most rainfall.

What to pack

Shoes with grip matter more than anything else, because the polished palace stone is slippery when wet and the Marjan paths are rocky. In summer add a hat, a refillable bottle and swimwear, since you will pass water every hour. In winter carry a light rain jacket, never an umbrella, which the sea wind turns inside out.
