Day trips from Valletta

Malta is small, and Valletta is a good base because every trip starts within an hour. The times below are door to door and rounded, not timetable values, so check the live schedule on the day.

The Three Cities: Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua

  • about 15 minBy the Valletta ferry across the Grand Harbour, which is part of the point
  • about 15 min

Three old fortified towns on the far side of the Grand Harbour, a short crossing from the Valletta waterfront. Birgu has the marina, the fort and the best lunch streets.

Tip: These harbour towns face Valletta across the water, and the ferry crossing gives the best photo of the bastions. Forum travellers often pair them with Valletta, but half a day is enough, so keep the morning for Valletta itself.

Mdina and Rabat

  • about 45 minBy bus from the Valletta terminal; Rabat is the town next door
  • about 25 min

A walled hill town in the middle of the island, with Rabat just outside its gate. Mdina is the quieter of the two once the coaches have gone.

Tip: Go in the afternoon and stay until the tour groups leave. A recent local thread recommends exactly that, and the lanes are far calmer then. Treat Mdina and Rabat as a separate day from the Three Cities.

Gozo

  • about 1 hBy Gozo High Speed from Valletta, or bus and ferry via Ċirkewwa
  • about 1 h 30 min

The second-largest island of the group, greener and slower than Malta. You reach it by a short sea crossing from the north of the main island.

Tip: The ferry crossing from Ċirkewwa takes about 20 minutes, but allow for the queue and for the bus on the far side. A separate island deserves its own day, and recent travellers suggest the ferry and local buses for getting around.

Comino and the Blue Lagoon

  • about 2 hBy bus to the ferry point, then a boat; regular boats run from both islands
  • about 1 h 15 min

A small island between Malta and Gozo, known for the lagoon and its turquoise water. Most people come for the swim and the boats.

Tip: It is a full-day outing, and in high season the lagoon is crowded, so aim for the morning or for the shoulders of the season. Check the boat times and the season on the day.
