Day trips from Vilnius

Two trips work well without a car. Others on the usual lists, Kernavė and Europa Park among them, are harder: visitors report that the public transport there is awkward, so plan the transport first. Europa Park costs €12 for adults and is open from 10 am until sunset; see the official page.

Once the main centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The island castle sits on Lake Galvė, and the town is known for kibinai, a baked pastry brought by the Karaims.

Tip: Compare train and bus times for the date, and add the walk from the station to the castle. The castle museum opens at 10 am and closes at 6 pm, except daily to 7 pm from May to September. It is shut on Mondays from March to April and October to November, and on Mondays and Tuesdays from December to February. See the museum site for the calendar.

  • about 1 hAbout an hour, according to the city tourism office.

Lithuania’s second city has Art Deco architecture, an Old Town and a brick castle. The train takes about an hour, which makes it a full city day rather than a quick excursion.

Tip: A full day suits it, and the museums make it a good answer to a wet forecast. Look up the return train before you go out for the evening.
