The difference between the start and end of the month is greater than it is in September. Many places still feel summery in the first week, but after 20 October wind, showers, and the exposure of the coast matter more than a long-term monthly average. Malta, eastern Sicily, and the Canary Islands are also useful because they offer plenty to do on a day without beach weather.

Kos lies in the southeastern Aegean, making it one of the better Greek choices for October. The sea is often close to 25 °C, particularly in the first half of the month. This relatively flat island is suitable for cycling, while Kos Town brings together historic remains, the harbour, and evening activity.

Exposed stretches of coast can be windy. Rather than relying on the water temperature alone, check the wind direction and waves each day. When conditions are calm, less crowded beaches and milder air temperatures are major advantages over the height of summer.

Ierapetra in southern Crete is generally warmer and drier than the north coast. The sea is around 24 °C, but transfers from the airports are longer, so southern Crete is better for a longer holiday than a quick weekend. Always check seasonal schedules and sea conditions before booking boat trips.

Rhodes offers a balanced combination of beaches, the old town, and Lindos. Its east coast is usually more sheltered, while the west is windier. During the final week of October, choose a larger resort or town with restaurants and sights available even on a rainy day.

The sea near Catania is normally around 23 to 24 °C in October. The first half of the month is noticeably more reliable for swimming, but eastern Sicily’s greatest advantage is its variety. Catania is a practical base for Mount Etna, Taormina, Syracuse, and smaller towns beside the Ionian Sea.

The coast is often rocky or volcanic, so it is not the best choice for travellers expecting only long sandy beaches. It works well for a trip where swimming occupies part of the day and the rest is devoted to food, cities, and excursions.

The sea around Malta is usually 23 to 24 °C in October and warmer at the start of the month. Sliema provides easy access to Valletta, Mdina, and other places, so an overcast day does not ruin the trip. Many urban bathing spots are rocky; northern Malta and Gozo are better for sandy bays.

Before departure, consult the sea temperature in Sliema and the weather in Sliema. Entering the water from rocks can be dangerous in strong wind, even when the water itself remains warm.

The water at Las Palmas is not the warmest in this comparison, but Gran Canaria has an important advantage: its late-October weather is often more stable than the Mediterranean. Las Canteras lies beside the city, while the island’s south is generally drier and sunnier than the north.

The Canary Islands are a strong choice for the final week of the month, when Mallorca, Kefalonia, and more northerly Mediterranean areas become less predictable. In the Atlantic, take waves, currents, and beach flags seriously even on a sunny day.

Kefalonia appeals to travellers seeking a quieter driving holiday, although services in smaller places begin to close in October. The sea is around 23 °C, and exposed beaches such as Myrtos can have substantial waves. Check which restaurants, accommodation, and excursions are still operating before booking.

Alcúdia in Mallorca has a long, relatively shallow beach, making it practical for families in early October. The weather is much less reliable later in the month. If swimming every day is the only objective, Cyprus, southern Crete, or Gran Canaria are safer choices.

The range is broad during the first two weeks: alongside Cyprus and the southern Greek islands, Malta, eastern Sicily, Kefalonia, and Mallorca are all reasonable options. After 20 October, Cyprus, southern Crete, and Gran Canaria move ahead, although none can guarantee uninterrupted sunshine.

In addition to the average sea temperature, check the short-term forecast, wind direction and strength, wave height, and rainfall. The type of coast and access to the water also matter. A sheltered sandy bay feels very different from an exposed rocky shore at the same water temperature.

October travellers should also check seasonal flights, ferries, excursions, and whether accommodation remains open. The season can end earlier on smaller Greek islands than in Cyprus, Malta, or Gran Canaria. A flexible booking is particularly valuable for the final week of the month.

Ayia Napa and Larnaca are the best choices for the warmest water and a classic beach break. Kos, southern Crete, and Rhodes provide the strongest Greek options. Malta and eastern Sicily make sense when swimming is paired with cities, while Gran Canaria is particularly strong late in the month.
